Did we learn anything from the Buffalo, NY active shooter

On May 14, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo, New York, at a Tops Friendly Markets store. 10 people were killed and 3 more injured. Luke is joined by John Valentine and Matt McGuire and discuss the evil that took place. They take a look at their current training and how they might be updating their training to make sure they are as prepared as possible for an active shooter situation.

Steve Fisher of Sentinel Concepts is one of the top shotgun experts in the country.  Steve sits down with Luke to discuss all things shotguns to include what are some good shotguns to stake your life on, semi vs. pump guns, what to add to your shotgun for home defense and ammo selection.

Steve Fisher has been the owner/lead instructor for Sentinel Concepts since 2014. He also is a contract instructor for numerous ranges in Michigan and has been a staff instructor for EAG Tactical.

Steve’s career as a trainer started in the 90’s, first at NTFT and then later as the owner/ lead trainer of MDFI, both Michigan-based companies, and served as one of the primary Instructors for Magpul Dynamics. He was responsible for the development of new programs and tactics for several local police departments and new training curriculum’s based on low light, home defense and the use of the carbine, handgun, and shotgun in various roles. 

Steve has been featured in SWAT Magazine, Recoil Magazine, Breach-Bang-Clear, and has written for both SWAT Magazine and Surefire Combat Tactics. He is a product designer for Tuff Products and provides product development insight for companies like Nighthawk Customs, Midwest Industries, FN, Trijicon, Agency Arms, Surefire and Robar to name a few. 

Over the years Steve has participated in numerous training programs from notable instructors in the industry as well as many local level schools and stays active on both sides of the training industry. He is also an avid hunter and has a history in the outdoor/hunting television community as both a hunter and cameraman.

What it takes to be a great instructor w/ Hunter Freeland

So, you want to be a firearms instructor? In this episode of the Green Ops Podcast Luke talked with Hunter Freeland about his journey to becoming an instructor. He discusses the amount of time someone needs to put into the firearm to not only master the skill of shooting but also master the skill of communicating with the student.   

Hunter started his shooting career in 2009 upon enlistment as a 19D into the Louisiana Army NG. While shooting for the Louisiana Combat Shooting Team, Hunter earned the Governor’s Twenty Tab and other EIC honors. During his enlistment, Hunter took advantage of every opportunity for schools and training destinations.

After leaving the military in 2016, Hunter worked for Triple Canopy as a security contractor in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Upon returning home, Hunter was commissioned with the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office where he aided in narcotics, investigative and SRT duties.

Hunter has trained with some of the leading instructors in the industry from Bill Blowers, Jared Reston, Scott Jedlinski, Aaron Cowan and many others amassing over 800+ hours of end user training over the past several years. He also holds instructor ratings in multiple categories ranging from LE Handgun, NRA Pistol to less lethal options like INIWIC and JPX.

Hunters continues to train with outside instructors and participate in competitive shooting events from USPSA to Steel Challenge and Multi Gun.

Hunter’s focus is on providing the best up to date training to allow for clean efficient growth of understanding and technique to the individual shooter. Not only building better shooters, but better men and women and stewards of the 2nd Amendment.

Hunter is also a Modern Samurai Project Endorsed Red Dot Pistol Instructor.

Setting up a Carbine for Defense with Matt McGuire

If you own a AR style rifle for defense you need to set it up correctly. On this episode of The Green Ops Podcast Luke talks with AR expert Matt McGuire on what gear should be put on your rifle as well as what gear you should leave off, what to upgrade and what to look for in a fighting rifle.

Matt is a United States Marine Corps veteran. Prior to the Marine Corps Matt worked for 2 years as a Martial Arts instructor for a school aged martial arts program and as a student, training in Muay Thai, Boxing, Kali Escrima and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Matt started shooting competitively in 2011 and through 2013 competed in USPSA, IDPA and 3 Gun.

He has over 125 hours of professional training from some of the most highly regarded instructors in the industry including Mike Pannone, Aaron Cowan, Scott Jedlinski (as a student, RSO and Assistant Instructor), Bill Blowers, Jared Reston, Kerry Davis, Steve Fischer as well as Green Ops. Matt is also a Modern Samurai Project endorsed Red Dot Pistol Instructor

From 2018 to 2020 Matt worked as the customer service representative, Quality Control and Law Enforcement sales representative for Sons of Liberty Gun Works. Matt's focus is on the performance use of firearms for civilians in defensive roles helping new shooters develop strong mindsets, efficient technique, enhanced self-awareness and confidence.

He is also an NRA certified pistol instructor and a Certified AR-15 Armorer. Matt has been a concealed carry license holder in Florida (2007-2008) North Carolina (2009-2011), Oklahoma (2011-2013) and Texas (2016-present).

Learning how to Fight with John Valentine

Luke is joined by Green Ops fight expert John Valentine to talk about the fight game.  John talks about how he got into BJJ, why you should be training in some sort of martial art and how introducing a weapon into a fight changes everything.

John is active-duty with over ten years of service. He has provided integrated training solutions for national and multinational military services. Working in the private sector, John taught various organizations providing training for service members, law enforcement, and everyday Americans. He also served as an assistant instructor to Matt Larsen while training special mission and intelligence units for several years.

He has attended ~600 hours of formal training in firearms and combatives to go along with over a decade of martial arts training. John's instructor certifications are:

• Rangemaster instructor development graduate

• Army Combatives instructor certified by Matt Larsen.

• RDS Instructor instructor certified by the Modern Samurai Project.

• Red Zone Empty Hand Knife Defense Instructor.

As a competitor, John is an international submission grappling medalist with experience in Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, and competitive shooting. John is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Modern Army Combatives under Matt Larsen.
