Read MoreI've recently started shooting IDPA, and enjoy it greatly. However, it has definitely revealed some shortcomings in my shooting technique, so I decided that, unclassified or not, I was going to sign up for the Green Ops "Practical Pistol / Competition Clinic" over at the NRA range, which happened last night.
As you would expect, the low light pistol clinic is an advanced course. I will preface this entire AAR with some honesty: I was on the jagged edge of having enough training, and as a result, I was probably the weakest shooter there. This was because I had not practiced one-handed shooting enough, and one-handed shooting is a serious requirement for this course. Being weak on that means trying to have to make that happen while you're simultaneously trying to make it happen with a light. This isn't to say I couldn't basically hit what I was aiming at, but it manifested in a lot of "just-outside-the-box" misses.

Eventually, I realized that though I was proficient at shooting my rifle, I needed to seek out training for my pistol work. Since then I’ve been through a dozen or so courses, and what I realized later was that I was not proficient back then. What I realized is these skills are all perishable, and that if I’m going to be honest, I must seek out training on a regular basis.

All good shooters, especially those who are instructors themselves, are life-long students of the craft that seek out knowledge from others at all opportunities. As a guy who is busy with family and work my ability to take training is more limited than I prefer, but I still try to take a couple of courses of some type each year.

Read MoreI just finished up a 4 hour defensive carbine class with these guys. This was a great class for beginners or even experienced shooters looking to get a refresher on the basics. The instructors were very knowledgeable and professional. I’m looking forward to taking more classes with them.

The staff taught useful, practical skills and didn’t waste a moment of time. I believe it was on pistol-forum.com where I first saw an announcement of one of their courses, and I also read at least one AAR of a class on that site as well as on Voodoo Man’s blog. I recall viewing the Green Ops website as well, but it wasn’t until John Murphy of FPF Training told me, during his Vehicle Tactics class, that Green Ops is definitely legit that I really started considering training with them.

Read MoreMike is a really good teacher, he takes time to work with each student, his demonstrations were spot on and he does a great job of teaching “methods” and reiterating that “methods” are just that… ”methods” on how to do something, not “the only way” to do something. I was really impressed with the fact that he spent time with each student on each drill, giving pointers here or there depending upon the need (skill based).

On the other end of the spectrum there were people who had absolutely no formal training whatsoever, with one person sort of in between due to military training.
